The 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl will be dishing out some of the sweetest college football action in the bowl season on January 2, 2006 in the Georgia Dome. The 72nd edition of the Nokia Sugar Bowl features the SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs as they take on the Mountaineers of West Virginia. For the first time in its long history, the Sugar Bowl will be held in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga., due to damage inflicted on the Louisiana Superdome by hurricane Katrina.

The Sugar Bowl was first proposed in 1927 by Col. James M. Thomson, who was the publisher of a New Orleans newspaper, and his sports editor Fred Digby. The push to make the Sugar Bowl a reality became a regular event, with Digby annually calling for the event in the newspaper. After slowly gaining support among sports fans and local community leaders, an organization called the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association was formed to spearhead the drive for a bowl game in New Orleans. The drive finally achieved its goal, and the first Sugar Bowl featured the Tulane Green Wave, an unbeaten team from the south, pitted against Temple, another unbeaten team.
