Alamo Bowl HistorySince that first contest the Alamo Bowl has grown into one of the premiere college bowl games in the post season. The Alamo Bowl annually pits a representative from the Big 10 against a team from the PAC 10, a showdown that creates unprecedented interest among college football fans. And why not? The competition has created some great contests packed with excitement and the chance to see future NFL stars in action. In 1995 the underdog Texas A&M Aggies, ranked 19th in the country, used their vaunted defense to shut down Michigan and future NFL quarterback Brian Griese in a 22-20 nail biter. Aggies’ place kicker Kyle Bryant came out of nowhere to kick a record five field goals in the win. College football fans everywhere can remember the Alamo Bowl of 1998 when a sophomore quarterback named Drew Brees emerged into the national spotlight. Brees, who went on to become a starting quarterback in the NFL, guided Purdue to a thrilling 34-37 win over Kansas State. Trailing late in the game after giving up a 10-point lead, Brees led the Boilermakers on a last ditch drive of 80 yards in just 54 seconds, scoring the winning touchdown with a 24-yard pass to wide receiver Issac Jones. The Alamo Bowl delivered again in 2001 when the Iowa Hawkeyes and Texas Tech Red Raider battled to a 19-16 win by Iowa that was decided only at the last minute when Iowa defensive back Bob Sanders gathered in an interception that ended the Raiders comeback hopes.
